After months of preparation, patience, and long days in the field, the moment we’ve been waiting for has arrived: harvest.
For a rice farm, harvest is more than the final step of the growing season. It’s the culmination of everything that came before it — preparing the ground, planting, managing water, watching the crop develop, and making countless decisions throughout the season to bring each field to maturity.
Now, the fields that have carried our crop all summer are turning golden, and our harvesters are heading in.
The Work Behind the Harvest
Rice may spend most of its growing season quietly developing in the field, but there is no shortage of work happening behind the scenes.
Our season begins long before a harvester ever enters the field. We prepare the ground, drill-seed our rice, carefully manage irrigation, and monitor the crop throughout its growth. Water management is especially important in rice farming, and our family has spent generations learning how to work with the land, the water, and the crop.
By the time harvest arrives, every field has a story behind it.
And then, almost overnight, everything speeds up.
When the Fields Turn Golden
As the rice matures, the green fields begin to turn golden. This is one of our favorite signs of the season — and one that tells us it’s almost time.
Harvest timing matters. The crop needs to reach the right stage before we can begin bringing it in. Once the timing is right, our team gets to work preparing the equipment and fields.
The harvesters move through the rice, cutting and threshing the mature plants and separating the grain from the straw. From there, the rice is transferred into bankout wagons and trailers before continuing through the next stages of handling.
It’s a coordinated effort between our field crew, equipment operators, and everyone working behind the scenes.
A Family Tradition
For us, harvest is also deeply personal.
Black Fox comes from a fourth-generation family farming operation, and agriculture has always been a family effort. The knowledge required to grow rice isn’t something you learn from a single season. It is passed down through generations, built through experience, and constantly refined.
Every Grain Matters
At Black Fox, we grow single-origin California Koshihikari rice right here on our family farm in Northern California.
Our rice is grown, harvested, and dried directly on the farm before continuing on to milling and packaging. Keeping the story of where our rice comes from close to home is important to us.
Because when you know where your food comes from, you understand that it represents much more than what’s printed on a package.
It represents a field.
A season.
A family.
And a whole lot of work.
From Our Harvest to Your Kitchen
Harvest marks the end of one chapter, but it’s also the beginning of another.
Soon, this year’s crop will make its way through the process that eventually brings it to your kitchen. And when you open a bag of Black Fox, we hope you know there is a little piece of our farm behind every grain.
From the first seeds in the spring to golden fields in the fall, every step matters.
And after all the work that goes into growing it, there’s nothing quite like seeing it finally come off the field.
Here’s to harvest 2026. 🌾
From our family farm to your table.
