Now that our 2016 Harvest is complete we are participating in winter projects that help our environment and wildlife. We have flooded our rice fields for the winter months to provide a home and food for a variety of local and migrating wildlife. This creates a beneficial floodplain habitat on post harvested rice fields. Nearly 230 different species such as shorebirds, waterfowl, wading birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, and amphibians benefit from these efforts.
We have been working with lead researchers and have participated in many of the trial studies and pilot projects that lead to the development of the Waterbird Habitat Enhancement Program (WHEP - NRCS) and BirdReturns (The Nature Conservancy). These programs are funded to create floodplain habitat in the fall and winter months (post harvest), which helps recreate the historic California valley floodplains.
